Transitional Living Center
Local Builder Dan Burdett (Burdett Hill Country Construction) began a new project groundbreaking for Cherokee Home for Children in Cherokee, Texas, just 19 mile north of Llano on Hwy 16 in San Saba County. Follow along with the phases of this project to see the progress of this once in a lifetime project for the kids!
Established in 1956 by the Cherokee Church of Christ this addition of the new Richard W. Zipp “Transitional Living Center” is another progressive leap into the future of many students. Richard W. Zipp was a dedicated patron and volunteer at CHC with ever spare moment of time spending his time lending his talents and care to the students. The campus is nestled into 55 acres in this beautiful Texas Hill Country setting where the new center will greet you as you arrive on campus.
Many of Cherokee Home’s children come to the program a year or more academically behind many of their peers and its possible with class sizes of less than a dozen that children can reach grade level through a partnership with Cherokee ISD, consistent tutoring, communication, and attention to learning challenges. The students also enjoy various athletics, 4H projects and many National Honor Society participants with support to pursue a vastitude of careers.
This new facility is a provide a critical function to transitional home skills that prepare students for life, like cooking, maintaining a car and financial preparedness for savings toward further training or the work environment. These programs and resources allow the now 36 full time resident students to graduate debt free.
Their mission remains faith based with a mission to provide a Christian home environment for children dependent on others for care. They promote their growth physically, emotional, and educationally, and most importantly develop children in the teaching of Gods word. Guiding children toward a devoted life of good citizenship in the world and ultimately in the Kingdom of God rounds out the daily dedication of this wonderful home.
